Jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award winner was born the 20th of February 1937 in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio. Her parents were ironworker Olden Wilson and his wife Lillian Ryan who worked as a domestic servant. Nancy was the oldest of six kids. Nancy was heavily influenced in her early years by the music her dad played and loved at his home. By the age of four, Nancy knew that she would like to become an artist. She began to develop her talent by singing in choirs at church. In high school, she appeared regularly with Skyline Melodies. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy was 17 at the time she completed high school. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for one term, Nancy quit to become a professional performer. Her debut album was released in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with her from 1956-1958. Nancy made her debut record with Dot Records while in the band. Cannonball addederley advised her to relocate to New York for her career and, in 1959, she relocated to The Big Town. Within one month, she got a gig singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club on Boston Road in The Bronx which was where her agent was introduced to her and signed her. The contract was signed with Capitol records in 1960 and she debuted the following year with the single. Guess Who You Saw Today. Capitol issued 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B in favor of music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped bring her to the forefront and her smash hit Tell Me the Truth was recorded in 1963. It led her to perform at New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she became a star.
