The Jazz singer Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award-winner was born on the 20th of February 1937 in Ohio, Chillicothe. She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson and his wife Lillian Ryan who worked as a domestic servant. Nancy Wilson was the only child of six. Nancy's father was an avid fan of music and loved to play records in the family. This had a great influence in her early years. When she was just four, Nancy knew she would be a singer. Her talents were developed through singing in the church choir. When she was 15, she won an audition on television and started appearing regularly in the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while at the time she was still in high school. It was at that time that she began to work in nightclubs at the same age. Nancy quit Central State University in Ohio after being matriculating for a full year. The first album she recorded was in 1956 by Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group was on tour with her between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut album through Dot Records during the time she spent with this group. Cannonball addederley advised her to relocate to New York for her career and, in 1959, she moved into The Big Town. In less than a month, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. Capitol Records issued five Nancy Wilson albums over a time span of 2 years. She began by focusing on R&B however, under Adderley's influence, she embraced jazz. Their 1962 collaboration Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to the top and her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth in 1963. The following year it led to her being invited to New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
