Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe to Olden Wilson, an ironworker, as well as Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was the youngest of six children. Cannonball Adderley advised her to move to New York to further her career and she went there to The Big Town in the year 1959. Within a short time she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. The representative of Adderley saw her singing and instantly agreed to sign her. In 1960, she was signed to Capitol Records and in that the same year, she debuted her first single. Guess who? The records she released were also successful. Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B to jazz and torch song. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley helped propel her to prominence and her breakthrough smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. In the year following it led to her getting booked in New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
