Nancy Wilson, a jazz singer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe on 20 February 1937 to Olden Wilson an ironworker who was employed for a lengthy period as housekeeper. Nancy Wilson was the only born child at the age of 6. Nancy's father was an avid music lover and played records with his children at home. This had a great influence on her as a child. It was clear that she wanted to be a singer by the time she was 4 years old. She developed her skills by performing in the church choir. Nancy made her debut record with Dot Records while in the group. Cannonball Adderley encouraged her to move in New York to further her career, and she moved into The Big Town at the end of 1959. Within a couple of weeks after, her manager heard her singing and hired her. The contract was signed with Capitol records in 1960 and she made her debut that year with the single. Guess Who I See Today? Her albums were a hit and Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. She initially focused on blues and rhythm under the influence of Adderley, she shifted away from R&B and embraced jazz and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley formed a band in 1962. This helped push her up the charts. The year 1963 was when she achieved the biggest success through Tell Me the Truth. The following year, this led to her being booked at the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
