Nancy Wilson, a jazz performer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Ohio, Chillicothe on 20 February 1937 to Olden Wilson an ironworker who had worked for a long period as housekeeper. Nancy is the youngest of six siblings. Nancy was extremely influenced when she was a young girl by the music her father played and loved at his home. As young as 4years old, Nancy was aware she would be a performer. The talent she had developed was discovered by singing with the church choir. In high school the singer began appearing regularly on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. The same year she started working in nightclubs. Nancy graduated high school aged 17 and enrolled in Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a entire year. Then she dropped out to pursue a job as professional musician. The first time she recorded was with Rusty Bryants Carolyn Club Big Band, with whom she performed from 1956 to 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made while she was in the Carolyn Club Big Band. Cannonball told her she should move into New York and go to The Big Town to continue her professional career. In less than a month she had been singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative was able to hear her perform and promptly agreed to sign her. Agent Adderley signed her to Capitol in the year 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess Who I Stopped Today. Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. She initially focused on rhythm and blues, under Adderley's influence she moved away from R&B and began to embrace the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley together with their 1962 group led her to the top of the charts. The singer had her breakout song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. It led her to perform at the New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
